Angelica Heritage Days – Friday – Sunday, July 31 – August
2
Visits to the Moses Van Campen place, a roque (croquet) tournament, and a variety of musical entertainment will highlight the 40th annual Heritage Days, to be held the weekend of July 31-August 2 in Angelica. The event is sponsored by the Angelica Booster Citizens.
Founded in 1805, Angelica is the oldest township in Allegany County and bills itself as “A Town Where History Lives”. The Park Circle and much of Main Street has been designated an Historic District and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Van Campen house, east of the village,
was built in 1809 by Revolutionary War soldier, surveyor, and pioneer settler
Moses Van Campen. It is individually listed in the National Register. Bill
Hart, owner, will give tours of the property on Saturday, Aug. 1 and Sunday,
Aug. 2, at 12:30 & 2:30 pm each day. The tours will be by tractor-drawn
wagon, leaving from Park Circle. The cost is $5.00.
“Moses Fest”, a celebration of the home’s 200th anniversary,
will take place Saturday night, with a historic talk and tour starting at
5:00 pm, a community dish-to-pass picnic at 7:00 pm, and live music by the
band Shakey Stage from 8:00 pm to midnight.
Croquet is an Angelica tradition that dates back to the 19th century. The unique court—a clay surface with oak plank sideboards—will be the stage for the semifinals of the annual tournament on Saturday, at 10:00 am & 2:30 pm. The championship match is set for Sunday at 1:30 pm.
The weekend festival kicks off at 7:00
pm on Friday night, July 31, with “Angelica’s Got Talent”,
a hometown talent show presented by the Angelica Players. The show takes place
at The Grange, the recently-restored former Presbyterian Church on Park Circle.
Admission is $2.00.
Hometown favorite Salty Austin returns to lead the Saturday entertainment
lineup with an 11:00 am performance in the Park Circle bandstand. Next up,
at 12:00 Noon, is Band of Brothers, followed at 2:00 pm by Sound Foundation.
On Saturday night, starting at 9:00 pm, local favorite Zoar will play under
the tent at the American House & Hotel on West Main Street (with cover
charge).
On Sunday, the Twin Tier Band will perform at 1:00 pm at the bandstand in
the park. Singing at 2:30 pm will be the Enchanted Mountain Chorus, followed
by the Fraterrigo Family Band at 3:30 pm.
Down Home Country will play on the lawn at the Angelica Sweet Shop on W. Main
at 4:00 pm.
Corporate sponsors of the Heritage Days entertainment are: Allegany Council
on Alcohol & Substance Abuse, Angelica Enterprises Inc., Angelica Spring
