Angelica Heritage Days – Saturday & Sunday, August 7th & 8th
Walking tours of the Historic District, a roque (croquet) tournament, and a variety of musical entertainment will highlight the 41st annual Heritage Days, to be held the weekend of August 7th & 8th in Angelica. The event is sponsored by the Angelica Booster Citizens.
Founded in 1805, Angelica is the
oldest township in Allegany County and bills itself as “A Town Where History
Lives”. In 1978 the Park Circle Historic District was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places. The District consists of 90 acres and at the time
of designation listed 84 buildings. It centers on Park Circle and runs east
and west along Main Street, including also White Street and the Allegany County
Fairgrounds. Within the District (individually listed in 1972) is the original
County Court House, a two-story Federal brick building with cupola, built in
1819.
Walking tours of the Historic District will be given on Saturday at 12:30 &
2:30 pm and on Sunday at 1:30 pm, led by David Fleming and Robert Dorsey. Sign
up for the tours at the Booster Citizens tent in the park; the cost is the purchase
of a $1.00 Heritage Days button.
Croquet is an Angelica tradition that dates back to the 19th century. The unique
court—a clay surface with oak plank sideboards—will be the stage
for the semifinals of the annual tournament on Saturday, at 10:00 am & 2:30
pm. The championship match is set for Sunday at 1:30 pm.
Hometown favorite Salty Austin
returns to lead the Saturday entertainment lineup with an 11:00 am performance
in the Park Circle bandstand. Next up, at 12:30 pm, is The Band of Brothers,
followed at 2:30 pm by Sound Foundation.
On Saturday night there is live music at the Black-Eyed Susan Acoustic Café,
22 West Main, with Jim Schwartz & Friends performing at 6:00 pm, followed
by Dallas Lucore playing from 7:30-9:30 (donation to tip jar). Starting at 9:00
pm, Zoar will play under the tent at the American House & Hotel, 128 West
Main (with cover charge).
On Sunday afternoon, the Fraterrigo Family Band will perform at 12:00 Noon in
the bandstand in the park. Playing at 1:30 pm will be the Twin Tier Band, followed
by the Dixie Boys at 3:00 pm. A country music performer will entertain on the
lawn at the Angelica Sweet Shop, 44 West Main, at 4:00 pm.
Corporate sponsors of the Heritage Days entertainment are: Angelica Enterprises
Inc., Angelica Spring Company, Angelica Winery, Bainbridge Family Farm, Community
